Australian GST Calculator
Add or remove Australia's 10% GST. Enter a pre-GST price to add GST, or a GST-inclusive total to pull it out — the GST inside any price is simply the total divided by 11. The calculator shows the pre-GST amount, the GST and the total, and which everyday items are GST-free.
$110.00 total incl. GST
Pre-GST price: $100.00 · GST (10%): $10.00 · Total: $110.00
To find the GST inside a price, divide the total by 11. $110.00 ÷ 11 = $10.00.
Australia's GST is a flat 10% on most goods and services (ATO). Basic food, most health and education are GST-free. How we calculate →
How GST works in Australia
Australia's Goods and Services Tax (GST) is a flat 10% added to the price of most goods and services. It has been 10% since it began on 1 July 2000 and applies nationally — there's no state variation. On a $100 pre-GST price you add $10 GST for a $110 total; to find the GST already inside a $110 price, you divide by 11.
Businesses registered for GST charge it on their taxable sales and claim back the GST they pay on purchases (input tax credits), so the tax ultimately falls on the end consumer.
What is GST-free in Australia?
Not everything has GST. Common GST-free categories include: most basic food (raw/fresh meat, fruit and vegetables, bread, milk, plain water); most health and medical care and many medicines; most education courses and childcare; exports and some international services; water, sewerage and drainage. Prepared, hot and snack foods, restaurant meals, soft drinks and alcohol are taxable at 10%.
If an item is GST-free, no 10% is added. Use the calculator for the taxable items in your basket, and switch to Remove GST to pull the tax out of a GST-inclusive total.
Adding vs removing GST (the ÷11 rule)
To add GST, multiply the price by 1.1 (or add 10%). To remove GST from a tax-inclusive total, divide by 1.1 — and the GST portion itself is simply the total divided by 11. For example, a $99 GST-inclusive price contains $9 of GST and $90 pre-GST. The calculator does both directions instantly.
Frequently asked questions
What is the GST rate in Australia?
GST in Australia is a flat 10% on most goods and services, set by the ATO and unchanged since it started on 1 July 2000. It's the same in every state and territory.
How do I calculate GST in Australia?
To add GST, multiply the pre-GST price by 1.1 (a $100 item becomes $110). To find the GST inside a tax-inclusive price, divide the total by 11 — so a $110 total contains $10 of GST. The calculator above does both.
How do I remove GST from a price?
Divide the GST-inclusive total by 1.1 to get the pre-GST price, or divide by 11 to get the GST amount. For example, $220 ÷ 1.1 = $200 pre-GST, with $20 of GST. Use the 'Remove GST' mode above.
What items are GST-free in Australia?
Most basic food (fresh meat, fruit, vegetables, bread, milk, plain water), most health and medical care, most education and childcare, and exports are GST-free. Prepared, hot and snack foods, restaurant meals, soft drinks and alcohol are taxable at 10%.
Is the GST the same in every Australian state?
Yes. Unlike sales taxes in some countries, Australia's GST is a single national 10% with no state or territory variation, so the calculation is the same whether you're in New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland or anywhere else.
