How sales tax works in Canada
Canada has three kinds of sales tax. The federal GST (Goods and Services Tax) is 5% everywhere. On top of that, some provinces add their own PST (Provincial Sales Tax) — or, in Quebec, the QST — while others combine both into a single HST (Harmonized Sales Tax) collected by the CRA. The rate you pay is set by the place of supply: where the sale is delivered or takes place.
That means a $100 purchase costs $105 in Alberta (GST only), $113 in Ontario (13% HST) and $114.98 in Quebec (5% GST + 9.975% QST). Pick a province above and the calculator fills in the right rate and splits the federal and provincial parts.
GST, HST and PST/QST — what's the difference?
GST-only provinces and territories (Alberta, the three territories) charge just the 5% federal tax. HST provinces (Ontario, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Prince Edward Island) fold the federal and provincial parts into one rate of 13–15%. GST + PST provinces (British Columbia, Manitoba, Saskatchewan) and GST + QST (Quebec) charge two separate taxes that add up.
For the consumer the total is what matters, but the split affects businesses claiming input tax credits. In PST and QST provinces the provincial tax is charged on the pre-GST price, so the two taxes simply add together.
2026 update: Nova Scotia's HST cut
On 1 April 2025 Nova Scotia reduced its HST from 15% to 14% (the provincial part dropped from 10% to 9%), the only rate change among the provinces in recent years. Every other province's rate is unchanged for 2026. The calculator uses the current 14% for Nova Scotia.
Frequently asked questions
How much is sales tax in Canada?
It depends on the province. The federal GST is 5% everywhere; provinces then add PST/QST or use a single HST, so the total ranges from 5% (Alberta and the territories) to 15% (the Atlantic HST provinces). Ontario is 13%, Quebec 14.975% and British Columbia 12%.
What is the difference between GST, HST and PST?
GST is the 5% federal tax charged across Canada. HST is a single harmonized tax (13–15%) used by five provinces that combines the federal and provincial parts. PST (and Quebec's QST) is a separate provincial tax added on top of GST in British Columbia, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Quebec.
Which provinces have the lowest sales tax?
Alberta, the Northwest Territories, Nunavut and Yukon charge only the 5% GST — the lowest in Canada. Saskatchewan (11%) and British Columbia/Manitoba (12%) are next. The Atlantic provinces are highest at 15% (Nova Scotia is 14% since April 2025).
Is QST charged on top of GST in Quebec?
Yes. Quebec charges 5% GST plus 9.975% QST, calculated on the pre-GST price, for a combined 14.975%. Both are shown separately on receipts, and the calculator splits them for you.
