US restaurant tipping is typically 15–20% of the pre-tax bill. How we calculate →
How to calculate a tip
A tip is a percentage of your bill: multiply the bill by the tip rate as a decimal. A 20% tip on a $60 bill is 60 × 0.20 = $12, for a $72 total. The calculator above does it instantly and lets you tap a preset — 15%, 18%, 20% or 25% — or type any percentage. Everything updates as you go, with no Calculate button.
How much should you tip in the US?
In the United States, the norm for sit-down restaurant service is 15–20% of the pre-tax bill, with 20% common for good service or in higher-cost cities. Counter service and takeout are usually 10% or a small flat amount, food delivery around 15–20%, and bartenders roughly $1–2 a drink or 15–20% of the tab. Tipping culture varies, but those ranges are a safe default — the calculator's presets reflect them.
Tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Strictly, a tip is calculated on the pre-tax subtotal — the cost of the food and drink, not the sales tax. Tipping on the post-tax total is common and only adds a little, but if you want to be precise, enter the pre-tax subtotal as the bill amount. On a $60 meal with $5 tax, 20% of $60 is $12 rather than 20% of $65.
Splitting the bill
Dining in a group? Enter the number of people and the calculator divides the total — and the tip — evenly, showing the amount each person owes and each person's share of the tip. It's the fastest way to settle up without anyone doing mental math at the table. For an uneven split, calculate each person's items separately and tip proportionally.
Rounding up
Many people like to round the total to a whole dollar — it's simpler to pay and nudges the tip up slightly. Turn on Round up total and the calculator rounds the final amount to the nearest dollar, adding the difference to the tip rather than the bill. A $71.40 total becomes $72, a clean number for cash or a quick mental check.
Quick tipping reference
For a fast estimate without a calculator: 10% is the bill with the decimal moved one place left; double it for 20%; halve that for an extra 5% to land on 15%. On a $48 bill, 10% is $4.80, so 20% is about $9.60. The calculator gives the exact figure, but the trick is handy when you're paying in cash.
Frequently asked questions
How do you calculate a tip?
Multiply the bill by the tip percentage as a decimal: a 20% tip on $45 is 45 × 0.20 = $9, for a $54 total. The calculator above does it instantly with preset buttons for 15%, 18%, 20% and 25%, or any percentage you type.
How much should I tip at a restaurant?
In the US, 15–20% of the pre-tax bill is standard for sit-down service, with 20% common for good service. Counter service and takeout are usually around 10%, and delivery 15–20%. The calculator's presets reflect these norms.
How much is a 20% tip on $100?
A 20% tip on $100 is $20, for a $120 total. Split between four people, that's $30 each. Enter the bill and number of people above for any amount.
Do you tip on the tax or before tax?
Tips are properly calculated on the pre-tax subtotal — the food and drink, not the sales tax. Tipping on the post-tax total is common and only slightly higher. To be exact, enter the pre-tax amount as the bill.
How do I split a bill with the tip?
Add the tip to the bill, then divide by the number of people. Enter the number splitting the bill above and the calculator shows each person's total and their share of the tip — including after rounding, if you use it.
How do I calculate a tip quickly in my head?
Move the decimal one place left for 10% of the bill, then double it for 20%. On a $36 bill, 10% is $3.60 and 20% is about $7.20. For 15%, take the 10% figure and add half of it.
Should I round up my tip?
Rounding the total to the nearest dollar is common and convenient — it makes the bill easier to pay and slightly increases the tip. Turn on 'Round up total' above and the calculator rounds the final amount and adds the difference to the tip.
How much should I tip for delivery or takeout?
Food delivery is typically tipped 15–20% (with a few dollars minimum), while takeout and counter service are usually around 10% or a small flat amount. Adjust the percentage above to match the service.
